The Two Oceans Aquarium is hosting this year’s International Zoo Educators’ Conference: Here’s what you need to know

In October 2026, Cape Town’s position as a global hub for conservation education will be solidified when the Two Oceans Aquarium hosts the International Zoo Educators Association (IZE) Conference. Bringing together conservation educators, communicators, and changemakers from around the world, the conference promises an inspiring week of collaboration, innovation, and meaningful conversations about the future of environmental education.

Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, the conference will take place inside the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront from 12 – 16 October 2026. This stunning location (if we say so ourselves) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for delegates to participate in keynote talks, workshops, and networking sessions while surrounded by spectacular exhibits housing an impressive array of marine life.

The IZE Conference is a flagship biennial event that has connected zoo and aquarium educators from around the world since 1972. This year’s conference marks an exciting moment for South Africa and for the Two Oceans Aquarium – not only will we welcome international delegates to Cape Town for an unforgettable exchange of knowledge, culture, and conservation leadership, but this is only the second time that the conference has been hosted on African soil.

Registrations for the IZE Conference 2026 are now open, and we encourage delegates to seize the opportunity to attend a conference like no other.

Cape Town welcomes the world

Few conference venues in the world can offer an immersive setting quite like the Two Oceans Aquarium. Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the Aquarium unveils the abundant marine biodiversity of southern Africa through seven galleries and numerous exhibits featuring endemic species such as African penguins, Knysna seahorses, puffadder shysharks, and South Africa’s national fish, galjoen.

Delegates attending IZE 2026 will enjoy access to the Aquarium throughout the conference, allowing for time to explore and connect with fellow delegates in between sessions.

Beyond its exhibits, the Two Oceans Aquarium and its Foundation continue to lead impactful conservation, education, and marine wildlife initiatives. From rehabilitating endangered turtles to disentangling seals and delivering educational programmes across communities, our work reflects the heart of the IZE community: Environmental education in action.

With Cape Town as the gateway to the rest of South Africa, delegates are encouraged to seize the opportunity to explore this magnificent country. Many international visitors combine their Cape Town conference attendance with safari experiences or coastal explorations, making the most of South Africa's incredible diversity in a single journey. Kruger National Park, Cango Wildlife Ranch, and the Garden Route are fabulous and accessible multi-day excursions, while the Cradle of Humankind and uShaka Marine World are perfect for a weekend getaway.
