Diving into discovery: Introduction to Marine Science 2025

This year, from 14 to 18 July, 58 curious Grade 8 and 9 learners gathered at the Two Oceans Aquarium for an unforgettable week exploring the world beneath the waves. The Introduction to Marine Science (IMS) course gave students a chance to dive into the exciting fields of marine biology, oceanography, and ecology, all in a fun and hands-on way designed to spark a deeper interest in the ocean and its mysteries.

A first step into Marine Sciences

The IMS course is designed as a stepping stone for learners considering Marine Sciences as a future subject or career. Over the course of the week, students explored a variety of topics, gained practical experience, and got a glimpse of the many paths that studying the ocean can open.

The preparation and delivery of the course ran smoothly. All content was available on the online learning platform, and the teaching staff came ready with engaging presentations and activities.

The journey through the week

The week’s programme introduced students to the multidisciplinary nature of Marine Sciences through a balance of classroom learning, practical activities, and field experiences.

On Day 1, students kicked off the course by exploring what Marine Sciences involves and learning about possible career opportunities. Talks from Aquarium staff gave learners insight into real-world marine careers. In groups, they researched and created posters about famous marine scientists and conservationists, laying the foundation for teamwork and scientific communication.

Days 2 and 3 focused on the scientific backbone of the field: Marine biology, ecology, and oceanography. Specimens, including live examples, helped students connect theory to reality, while interactive activities reinforced learning.

On Day 4, learners left the classroom behind for a rocky shore expedition in Muizenberg. After exploring the intertidal ecosystem, they collected data and samples for their scientific enquiry task, which they would present at the end of the week.

On Day 5, back at the Aquarium, students processed their data, analysed findings, and designed scientific posters. Each group proudly presented their work to peers and staff before celebrating their achievement with a course completion certificate.

Assessments and growth

Throughout the course, learners were assessed to measure their progress:

  • Pre-assessment average: 14%
  • Assessment 1 (Days 1 & 2): 53%
  • Assessment 2 (Days 3 & 4): 33%
  • Post-assessment average: 54%

The results showed remarkable improvement, particularly compared to the initial baseline. Beyond the numbers, the confidence students gained in scientific thinking and collaboration was clear by the end of the week.

Looking ahead

For many participants, this was their first real introduction to the scientific study of the ocean. Fifteen students had already attended previous Ocean Campus courses, but for the majority, the IMS course was their first taste of this fascinating subject.

By combining fun, practical activities with serious academic learning, the IMS course inspired learners to think about their future subject choices and even potential careers in Marine Sciences. Most importantly, it gave them a deeper appreciation for the ocean and its vital role in our world.

Whether they continue to advanced courses or simply carry this knowledge into everyday life, each participant walked away with new skills, new perspectives, and a certificate to mark the beginning of their marine science journey.
