Inspiring sustainable tourism for a healthier ocean

Cape Town, one of the world’s most iconic coastal destinations, attracts countless visitors each year. With its rich marine biodiversity and breathtaking coastline, it also carries a shared responsibility to protect and preserve what makes it so special.

This is why we recently partnered with local tourism operators for an engaging and impactful Ecotourism Training Course, designed to strengthen sustainable practices and deepen understanding of our ocean ecosystems.

Generously sponsored by FirstRand Bank Limited, this intensive two-day training initiative created a space for learning, reflection, and connection. Participants explored the intricacies of our coastline and the incredible biodiversity it supports, while unpacking key topics such as fisheries management, responsible tourism, and core ecotourism principles.

A firm favourite for our course participants was exploring a few of the many coastal rock pools and putting their newly acquired marine knowledge to the test. Seeing the abundance of marine life in the rock pools in person with the guidance of our marine educators is a truly special experience. The tour guides can share this experience with their clients as they show off the beauty and diversity of our coastline.

Through hands-on activities, discussions, and real-world applications, participants gained not only valuable insights but also the confidence to communicate these ideas effectively in their own work. Whether guiding tours, engaging guests, or shaping business practices, each participant left better equipped to make a meaningful difference.

“The course was widely seen as highly beneficial, equipping participants with deeper knowledge of the local ecosystem and greater confidence to share accurate, engaging information with their guests,” says Phindile Gazu, Adult Training Coordinator.

This course, conducted with Cape Town’s passionate tour operators, reminds us that a focus on ocean conservation is not limited to scientists or conservationists; it is everyone’s responsibility. No matter your field, your daily decisions and interactions impact the ocean. By building ocean literacy across industries, we can reduce our collective footprint and support a more sustainable future.

Educating adults in tourism, business, hospitality, and beyond creates a ripple effect; informed individuals inspire informed communities, and understanding the ocean increases the desire to protect it.

Our Adult Training with Ocean Campus offers ocean literacy programmes designed for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of the marine environment and gain practical tools for sustainability. At the end of the day, we are all connected to the ocean, and we all have a role to play in protecting it. These programmes are an excellent opportunity for individuals to achieve just this.
