These sharks are often confused with puff adder shysharks, but can be identified by their broader, more bluntly rounded snouts and depressed heads, and their large, light spots on a dark body.

They occur along the coast of Namibia and the west coast of South Africa, in the cool Atlantic Ocean.

According to, dark shysharks are commonly found in shallow, sandy areas. They feed on small, bottom-dwelling fish, crustaceans, and molluscs like octopuses and squid.

Like puff adder shysharks, dark shyskarks curl up when threatened or caught.
