The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation is the non-profit, public benefit arm of the Two Oceans Aquarium, founded in 2018 to further our vision of preserving our oceans for the benefit of all. Our Foundation works to have the greatest impact possible in the communities and habitats shared by both humans and marine life through the principles of C.A.R.E. - Conservation, Awareness, Research and Education.
The Two Oceans Aquarium and our Foundation are active in a number of marine conservation initiatives, including flagship projects like the Turtle Rescue Programme and the Marine Wildlife Management Programme at the V&A Waterfront. These efforts have variously rescued, rehabilitated and released five species of endangered sea turtle, marine mammals, ocean sunfish, sharks and coastal seabirds.
The Aquarium and our Foundation carry the mandate to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire others to act in the best interests of our environment and each other. To aid in reaching this goal, the Foundation and Aquarium run a number of high profile campaigns emphasising the importance of choosing reusable options over single-use plastics.
Through our Foundation, the Aquarium's research capacity has been greatly expanded. The Foundation supports various external research projects, creates research and work-integrated-learning opportunities available to local higher educational institutions, and has increased its internal research outcomes significantly.
The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation places a strong emphasis on marine science literacy, for the benefit of future generations of South African children, and the ocean at large. Efforts of our Foundation in this regard include environmental education outreach programmes, early childhood development lessons, thousands of subsidised lessons for school learners, and the introduction of Marine Sciences as an official element of the South African high school curriculum.
About our Foundation
The Two Oceans Aquarium has a 25-year legacy of inspiring care and passion for ocean conservation, and has established itself as a leader in environmental education, wildlife conservation and research, and marine sciences training.
By establishing the registered non-profit public benefit organisation, Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation, in 2018, we have taken our next steps to fulfil our mission of inspiring action for the future well-being of the ocean.
The Education Foundation aims to achieve this outcome through far-reaching and inclusive education programmes, rigorous research practices, and dedicated conservation projects – such as rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing distressed sea turtles.
