PLEASE NOTE: The Smart Living Challenge Zone is no longer on display at the Two Oceans Aquarium. You can learn more about how you can live sustainably here, and learn more about the City of Cape Town's sustainability initiatives here.

The Two Oceans Aquarium’s Smart Living Challenge Zone, launched in December 2015, is a state-of-the-art exhibit that was developed in conjunction with the City of Cape Town and interactive design firm Formula D. Together, we worked to create an original, playful way to create awareness around biodiversity, water, waste and electricity.

Formula D’s engrossing visuals, together with their expert use of gamification principles, are helping us, every day, to develop mindfulness and drive action among the thousands of people who visit us every month. Employing 3D projection mapping, touch-screen technology and barcode scanning, Formula D created a choice-driven, interaction-based game that contains within it lessons that are essential to life. From planning energy resources for a growing city, to maintaining a healthy biodiversity in a virtual park, this installation helps visitors to see how their choices impact the world around them.

The Smart Living Challenge Zone was developed to instill essential sustainability lessons in the hearts and minds of young and old. Are you up for the challenge?
