Two Oceans Aquarium Membership Co-ordinator Amina Hoosain makes sure all our Solemates stay happy. Here she answers six burning questions.
What are you reading at the moment?
The Riddle by Alison Croggon, Thud by Terry Pratchett and Confessions of a Fallen Angel by Ronan O’ Brien.
What is your favourite band or kind of music?
Right now, anything that moves me! Local Cape Town bands Hot Water and Captain Stu are bringing out great music.
Where would you like to go on holiday?
I’d love to visit Greece, Turkey, Ireland and Japan.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done?
Oh gosh, there are so many instances! I’ve been a mascot character, doing things like running a marathon in a penguin suit, being “lost penguin” and walking on my own in Cape Town and Sea Point as part of a phone-in competition (and being put in a holding area when police discovered me inside the Parliament buildings, even though we had permission!), doing the penguin dance at Newlands stadium at an opening ceremony for a Western Province rugby game; handing out gingerbread man biscuits in peak traffic to passing motorists; dressing up for our ABBA show last year ...
“Crazy” is comparative: After working here for so long, the word crazy doesn’t really mean the same to me as to other people.
What’s your green tip?
Switch off your geyser when it’s not in use; I’ve become quite serious about doing this!
What do you love most about your job?
Making things “fit”: seeing and feeling the appreciation of people when they realise what a privilege it is to be at the Aquarium, and how they can contribute, learn and benefit. Being part of the “Aquarium bookmark” in people’s lives and their learning. Being in an environment that is completely unique and all the opportunities and interactions that result from that. Being part of producing unique experiences that people will treasure and boast about.
