On 31 July, the Aquarium's SEA Team - a group of inspired young individuals committed to conserving, protecting and respecting the environment - held their very first beach cleanup. Here's the feedback from the day.

Sunset Beach is located between Lagoon and Blouberg beaches in Cape Town. Sunset Beach was carefully chosen for the Two Oceans Aquarium SEA Team’s first beach cleanup, because here a lot of litter accumulates, both from the ocean and the lagoons and rivers in the stormy months. After months of careful planning and numerous meetings, the day - Sunday 31 July 2016 - was finally upon us.

Sunset Beach is known for its jaw-dropping beauty.

But when we got there, this is what we were greeted by:

An overcast, cold and miserable day.

However, that was not going to stop us! We were humbled by the response from the public: an intrepid group of over 100 people braved the harsh conditions and joined us at the beach cleanup to make a difference in our environment. In total, more than 40 bags of marine debris were collected off the beach.

Smiles all round from the SEA Team:

Overall, the beach cleanup was a huge success! We really appreciate the support and effort that was made to attend our event. Watch this space, Hout Bay beach - we are coming to clean you next!

Next beach cleanup

The next beach clean-up will be on 4 September 2016 at Hout Bay beach. More details will follow closer to the time. Hope to see you there!
