After Dark is back!

After Dark at the Two Oceans Aquarium is back! Following the sold-out success of the 2018 shows, Texx and the City and the Aquarium are once again joining forces to showcase some of South Africa's finest musical acts. Over four nights from May to August 2019, the Aquarium will host eight stellar bands: Shadowclub, Manu Grace, Dangerfields, Twin Weaver, Manny Walters, Luh’ra, The Steezies and Androgenius will be honouring the Mother City’s love for live music right here at one of Cape Town’s best-loved attractions.

Performing stripped-down acoustics sets, all eight bands will make the most of the unusual setting. The viewing area in front of the I&J Ocean Exhibit will be transformed into a cozy, living room-style setting where you’ll be able to enjoy two bands on each evening. Holding 1.6 million litres of sea water, the I&J Ocean Exhibit provides a massive home to stingrays, musselcracker, sea turtles and many more marine creatures. There really is no better or more beautiful backdrop for any event.

31 July 2019: Manny Walters and Luh’ra

Calling all blues lovers!

Our next show will showcase the gritty, soulful music of Manny Walters. Fresh off a season delighting the crowds in Russia, this artist may describe his sound as “electric rhythm & blues/ alternative soul”, but, however you choose to categorise this music, one thing is clear – Manny is imbued with an intuitive and instinctive musicality that is rare indeed in its authenticity and gravitas. His influences include Prince, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Tracy Chapman. Manny will be supported by songstress Luh’ra on 31 July 2019.

Exclusive to After Dark ticket holders: You can upgrade your ticket to an Aquarium membership for just R245 - a 40% saving - and gain access to a year's unlimited visits as well as boatloads of other benefits. Purchase your After Dark ticket and add an annual membership for R245 via Quicket today – you can activate it at the gig.

About Manny Walters

Manny Walters is a distinct South African singer-songwriter with influences rooted deeply in rhythm and blues, rock, and soul music. Influenced by the work of artists like Tracy Chapman, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield, Manny delivers his honest and intelligently poised lyricism with the kind of passionate, soulful intensity that is as timeless in its ambition as it is inspirational in its contemporary appeal, the grit-flecked, raw soul of his commanding voice profoundly resonant in its ability to captivate the listener.

About Luh’ra

Luh’ra is a singer-songwriter based in Cape Town. Accompanied by her golden guitar, the best way to describe her music would be acoustic soul. She takes careful consideration to transform spaces through tranquil melodies, sharing personal feelings and moments through her lyrics, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own experiences. Luh’ra has been avidly sharing her music for around two years. An important part of engaging with Luh’ra’s music is space. Find her singing in the Aquarium, galleries, plant shops or boutique stores – you name it. If it’s a special and calming space, Luh’ra will find a way to share her music there.

In 2018, the After Dark shows – featuring headliners Grassy Spark, aKING and Majozi – were a roaring success and all three events sold out in record time. So we’re over the moon to have added an extra date to this year’s events calendar and to once again work with Tecla Ciolfi, founder and editor of entertainment website Texx and the City, to curate our lineup of rising stars. We couldn’t do this without her!

“This year, we think Cape Town audiences will respond to the creativity of the music on offer and we’ve added some truly compelling acts to the lineup,” said Two Oceans Aquarium Marketing Manager Ingrid Sinclair. “This series of concerts is a testament to the talent that proliferates in South Africa.”

About the renewal of After Dark, Texx and the City’s Founder and Editor Tecla Ciolfi says, “The team at Two Oceans Aquarium are some of the best people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Last year’s series was a career high for me so to get to do this all over again, with an additional show, is a real honour.”

This year, After Dark ticket holders will enjoy access to a special Two Oceans Aquarium membership offer! Every After Dark ticket will entitle the holder to a year’s unlimited access to the Aquarium for just R245 (usual price R430; Ts&Cs apply).

Drifter Brewing Company will also return this year to give concert-goers a complimentary taste of their special nautical-themed brews. Symbolising adventure, creativity and community, we can’t think of a better brand than Drifter to complement the boatloads of passion that makes After Dark possible.

With performances at Rocking the Daisies, River Republic, Up the Creek and Splashy Fen, the offbeat, cheeky band have swiftly solidified their eccentric presence with their vibrant live shows.

About Androgenius

Androgenius is a four-piece band hailing from Cape Town. Rather than sticking to a genre, their music explores various moods and melodies, fusing old-school R&B and soul with funk, hip hop and jazz to create a sound they’ve aptly dubbed “soul hop”. They make music for the brain and the booty.
