We invite you to watch an extraordinary story unfold. How a girl from Pietermaritzburg went from keen dancer and gymnast, to animal trainer, to wife and traveller, to Curator of Mammals at Sea World Durban, to businesswoman ahead of her time, to penguin trainer at the Two Oceans Aquarium, and then, through and beyond a devastating illness that saw her turn around at the brink of death, to where she is today: a passionate, driven, dedicated and inspirational activist who is at the forefront of the movement to ban the single-use plastic bag in South Africa.

Since this episode aired, Rethink the Bag – Hayley’s passion, professionally and personally – has enjoyed increased support. Rethink the Bag, a campaign of the Two Oceans Aquarium, aims to ban the single-use plastic bag in South Africa.

What can I do to help?

As a start, you can start refusing plastic bags when you go shopping for groceries. South Africans use more than 8 billion single-use plastic bags per year! It's time to bring that number right down.

Then, you can help by signing the petition: Hayley is aiming to get 5 000 signatures by 31 December 2016.

Here, Hayley shares some cool ways that you can get involved with Rethink the Bag:

Want to go one step further? Show us your bag!

"Like" the Rethink the Bag page on Facebook or follow Rethink the Bag on Twitter, take a pic with your reusable bag and share it with us. We want to build an album of everyday eco-warriors like you to inspire change in others. Social media is a powerful instrument for change; help us show them how it’s done.

Thank you to everyone who has already made a pledge or signed the petition, or taken the survey! If you haven’t done so yet, please do: click here to find out how you can help.

Together, we can do this!
