The Fleur de Passion, the global research vessel of The Ocean Mapping Expedition will be docked in the V&A Waterfront from 2 January to 15 February 2019. Two Oceans Aquarium members are invited to meet the team and learn about the exciting work being done in an exclusive event, free to all our up-to-date annual members on 19 January. The general public is also welcome to view Switzerland's largest sailboat on its Cape Town visit and learn more about this exciting project below.
Members of the public will be able to see the ship and view the Our Spice Islands exhibition, created by the team of artists and explorers of The Ocean Mapping Expedition, throughout the Fleur de Passion's visit to Cape Town. The ship and exhibition will be viewable at the V&A Waterfront's Quay 6 and Jetty 2 respectively (just outside the Table Bay Hotel).
What is The Ocean Mapping Expedition?
The Ocean Mapping Expedition is a project of Swiss NPO Fondation Pacifique - a four-year journey around the world, to write a new ocean story 500 years after Ferdinand Magellan's epic voyage. Taking place half a millennium after the first-ever human circumnavigation of the earth, the Fleur de Passion and its crew aim to map human impacts on the ocean.
During this four-year journey, The Ocean Mapping Expedition is observing, mapping and trying to understand the state of the ocean's ecosystems and help raise awareness about crucial sustainable development issues in the ports where they stop. Along the route, the Fleur de Passion is carrying out ongoing scientific investigations, which include studies of noise pollution, micro- and mesoplastic pollution, animal habitats and the ocean's effects on global climate change.
About the free members' event
The day's exciting programme includes three main events:
- A 45-minute presentation by the Ocean Mapping Expedition team in the Aquarium.
Join crew members of the Fleur de Passion in our Auditorium to be introduced to the spirit, missions and achievements of the expedition. This presentation includes a documentary on the historic Fleur de Passion research vessel and parts of the docuseries created about the expedition.
- A guided tour of the Fleur de Passion, warship turned research vessel.
Members can experience the unique opportunity to visit the Fleur de Passion, a 33m-long Swiss ketch, a former WW2 minesweeper turned into a research sailboat. During the tour, members will learn about their research work, from surveying ocean microplastics to deep sea noise pollution. Weather permitting, there will also be a demonstration on how the rigging of a large sailboat like this works.
- A free visit to the Our Spice Islands exhibition.
Head to Jetty 2 and explore Our Spice Islands, a spectacular exhibition of the world map created by both the Fleur de Passion and Ferdinand de Magellan's historic voyage around the planet, the complete The Ocean Mapping Expedition docuseries, and various works created by the Swiss artists who embarked on the Fleur de Passion's journey from Seville, Spain, to Cape Town.
