Developed in partnership with the City of Cape Town, our Smart Living Challenge Zone is a room filled with interactive and gamified lessons in sustainable living, focussing on the four key elements of water, biodiversity, energy and waste.

Fikile Sizwenya is a Visitor Services Guide at the Two Oceans Aquarium. One of his main duties is overseeing the Smart Living Challenge Zone - a room that has no animals, yet might have the most important environmental message at the Aquarium.

"This room is my favourite place, because all the lessons we are trying to teach in the Aquarium are here. This is what everything is about", says Fikile.

Fikile went on to say that there is no separation between "conservation" and "home life" - your actions at home have a direct impact on nature. You cannot call yourself a nature lover if you do not have a sustainable, appreciative relationship with the water usage, energy consumption and waste generating aspects of your life.

My Smart Living promise...

Leading by example is the best way to encourage people to make a positive change, believes Fikile. For that reason, he has decided to show everyone just how easy it is to make your very own promise in the Smart Living Challenge Zone:

Thanks for your time in talking to us about this message Fikile.
