The Two Oceans Aquarium’s Environmental Education Centre offers a series of wonderful, free enrichment courses for learners through the Marine Sciences Academy. The Smart Living Course for grade 7s introduces the concept of "sustainability", and participants get to explore this concept through the themes of waste, water, energy and biodiversity.

Book your child’s spot soon to avoid disappointment (details below).

What is the course about?

The Smart Living Course, which is sponsored by the City of Cape Town, encourages children to start thinking about their impact on the environment and aims to inspire them to take positive action for a sustainable future. Participants will learn about our biodiversity and why it is important, and about how to save water, reduce waste and conserve energy. They’ll also learn about major environmental problems, as well as how to prevent or mitigate them.

In addition to topics around human impacts on the environment and sustainable living in a modern society, this free course introduces ecological concepts, marine ecosystems and sustainable use of the ocean as a source of food, energy, minerals, tourism opportunities and recreation. Field trips are arranged to provide practical insight, where possible.

During the Smart Living course, learners learned about concepts like the "knock-on effect", whereby small changes or damages to one part of nature can have large impacts on other parts of the environment.

The Smart Living Course's lessons echo the interactive games that form part of the Aquarium’s Smart Living Challenge Zone. Launched in December 2015, this state-of-the-art exhibit was developed in conjunction with the City of Cape Town and interactive-design lab Formula D.

Open up a whole new world

The Smart Living course takes the Challenge Zone games into the classroom and out into the field, immersing young participants in the science of sustainability. While not strictly a marine-themed course, the importance of understanding nature, its processes and how we affect them, is an important stepping stone towards any potential career in the sciences.
