No more than two in a thousand loggerhead turtles survive into adulthood. Thanks to compassionate and caring people just like you, stranded hatchlings are rescued along the Cape's coast and nursed back to health by our turtle rehabilitation and release team.

Another generation of rescued sea turtles needs your help! Many endangered loggerhead hatchlings and a few struggling big turtles have been rescued this year and are on the road to recovery - but we need your help to get them through the final leg of their recovery. Here's how you can help:

Why aren't we putting turtles up for adoption like last year? 2018 has been a tough year for turtles, most of which have been very compromised and needed additional care - that's why your help is so important to help them continue their journey.

Help us help them

It costs the Aquarium about R27 per day to rehabilitate the average turtle – but few of them are “average”. From 25g hatchlings to 80kg heavyweights, dehydration to broken shells and picky eaters to energetic rascals, it takes a passionate and dedicated team to provide each turtle with the individual care and treatment it needs.

We are opening up the opportunity to adopt a turtle by paying for its rehabilitation - and in so doing, helping us continue our turtle conservation work. The adoption fee helps us cover the extensive medical care and compassion "spent" on each and every individual turtle. In return, adopters get a unique certificate of adoption, a "turtle biography", a dedicated spot on our "turtle wall" as well as the knowledge that you've helped save a life.

These little ones will be released in Summer once each one has been cleared for release by our vet - performing full examinations on each turtle, including a number of blood tests to ensure they are healthy enough to be let go

Meet the 2017 turtle adoptees...

A huge thank you to everyone who adopted. All the turtle hatchlings' rehabilitation costs have been covered!

All of the 2017 adopted turtle hatchlings were successfully released on 16 December 2017, alongside their giant aunty Yoshi, off of Cape Town's coast. We've been tracking Yoshi's movements, and water conditions have been perfect for loggerheads - we are sure all the hatchlings have had the ideal second chance at life.

Thank you to all our donors and adopters - you've helped us to help another generation of stranded and distressed sea turtles.
