Appearance and lifestyle:
Sand steenbras (Lithognathus mormyrus) is a slim, oval shaped fish that is silvery-grey in colour and it has dark vertical stripes across its body. These fish use camouflage to mimic the ripple patterns in the sand caused by currents and tides.
Habitat:
They can be found in shallow coastal waters in areas with sandbanks.
Diet:
They feed mainly on bottom-dwelling animals e.g. cracker shrimps, sea lice and molluscs.
Threats:
Overfishing, climate change, pollution etc.
