Appearance and lifestyle:

Geometric moray eels (Gymnothorax griseus) are synchronous hermaphrodites, which means they produce both eggs and sperm simultaneously and can therefore mate with any other geometric moray. Roughly 8000 to 12000 buoyant fertilised eggs are released at a time. These eels grow to 65 cm in length.

Habitat:

Found on coral reefs in the Red Sea and the Western Indian Ocean, south of the Eastern Cape.

Diet:

They are nocturnal feeders that feed mainly on small fish.

Threats:

Climate change, pollution, habitat loss.
