Appearance and lifestyle:
Evileye pufferfish (Amblyrhynchotes honckenii) are a grey-brown fish that has large white spots, they are rounded pufferfish and they have rough skin, a small mouth and big eyes. They grow to 19cm.
Like other puffers, evileye puffers are poisonous and many fishers will not even touch them. The flesh should not be eaten or fed to pets.
Habitat:
Evileye puffers are found in the Indo-West Pacific, mainly along continental shores from Maputo to False Bay. They live in estuaries, seagrass beds, sandy and rocky area to depths of 400m. Juveniles are occasionally seen in tidal pools.
Diet:
Evileye puffers feed on crabs, isopods and other small fishes.
Threats:
Pollution, climate change, habitat loss.
