Appearance and lifestyle:
The cape stumpnose (Rhabdosargus holubi) is a silver fish that has a mid-lateral yellow stripe from its head to its tail. Its name stumpnose comes from its short blunt snout. They can grow up to 40cm. The minimum legal catch size is 20cm.
Habitat:
Commonly found in shallow coastal waters and estuaries as well as deep reefs off the Kwa-Zulu Natal coast.
Diet:
Juveniles feed on eelgrass in estuaries and adults on molluscs, shrimps and crabs.
Threats:
