The spotted unicornfish occurs in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, from Kenya to Durban, on rocky and coral reefs at depths between 5 and 30m.
Juveniles feed mainly on algae while adults eat zooplankton.
They grow to about 60cm and can live for 30 years or more.
The dorsal, anal and pelvic spines of similar species are considered venomous.
