Smallmouth bass (alien) Micropterus dolomieu

Indigenous to North America, smallmouth bass are common in many South African rivers.

Young fish feed on insects and small crabs, but by the time they are adults, other fish make up most of their diet.

Our small indigenous fish have few natural defences against predators and thus are easy victims to exotic fish like bass. This has had a severe impact on indigenous fish populations in many rivers.
