Fast facts
- Preference for picking dry seeds from sunflower heads
- Lives in large flocks
The Cape canary is found in the Western Cape, up the east coast of South Africa and as far north as Zimbabwe.
It lives in large flocks on the edges of open, treed grassland, in gardens, parks and cultivated fields.
The bird forages on the ground for seeds, or perches on seed-producing plants such as sunflowers, but will also eat fruits and flowers.
