Fast facts
- Prefer deep, offshore habitats
- Listed as Green (good choice) on SASSI’s Customer Seafood List
Blue hottentot are often confused with bronze bream. They can be distinguished by checking their teeth; blue hottentot have more teeth.
Blue hottentot are plentiful off the coasts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
Because they prefer deeper offshore habitats they are not caught by shore anglers, but by ski-boat fishermen.
They are currently listed as a green species on SASSI’s Customer Seafood List. Green-listed species are a good choice because they are more plentiful and they can cope better with fishing pressure.
