Conservation Research at the Two Oceans Aquarium

In addition to our many inspiring exhibits, we are also involved in a number of exciting conservation and research programmes. Our endeavours with ocean sunfishes, finfish culture and, most recently, shark conservation, have caught the attention of local and overseas scientists, resulting in some fascinating and exciting collaborative work.

Sunfish

Sunfish are gentle giants, feeding mainly on jellyfish and attaining weights of over 2,000kg. Although we do not display them, we assist injured/stranded sunfish and contribute to international sunfish research by tagging these mysterious animals with satellite tags.

Finfish

Local finfish stocks have declined dramatically. In the interests of our fishing communities and wild fish stocks, we feel that more emphasis should be placed on fish farming rather than fishing. We supply aquaculture facilities with fertilized eggs and assist in collecting brood stock.
South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative

Many of us are eating fish more often, but do you know where your favourite seafood comes from? We support the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) which aims to help you make informed choices when buying or ordering seafood.

Save our Seas M-Sea Programme

The Save Our Seas Foundation M-Sea Programme aims to gain scientific information about ragged-tooth sharks and to raise awareness of their plight. The ambassador for the M-Sea Programme, Maxine, was tagged and released back into the ocean in 2004.

Rethink the Shark Ad

In line with our attempts to put shark attacks into perspective, advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi (Cape Town), in partnership with production company Groundglass, produced three outstanding advertisements. Comparing shark attacks to deaths caused by the use of everyday appliances and toys and cleverly interweaving the hysteria portrayed in films such as “Jaws”, they show that the chance of falling prey to a shark attack is miniscule in comparison to deaths caused by defective toasters, people falling off chairs and, believe it or not, flying kites! Their message is neither frivolous nor disrespectful. It is simply that we need to “Rethink The Shark”.
