SeaFans: New programme for Grade 8 and 9 learners
By Katja Rockstroh / 15 May 2012
Many of the Two Oceans Aquarium Environmental Education Centre supporters have asked what we are offering for Grade 8 and 9 learners as a result of the success of our Young Biologist Course and Matric revision programmes for senior learners. Programmes aimed at this younger age group are clearly in demand. It is our pleasure to announce the launch of SeaFans, a programme aimed at Grade 8 and 9 students, happening from 9 to 13 July 2012.
The purpose of this course is to:
- provide important basic environmental, zoological and biological knowledge;
- supplement and support school curriculum material; and
- provide enrichment for students interested in marine life.
Examples of course content include:
- shoreline ecology;
- rocky shores;
- sandy shores;
- estuarine systems;
- open-ocean ecology;
- fisheries; and
- ocean currents.
The five-day SeaFans programme is being offered at no charge to 50 Grade 8 and 9 learners who show an interest in marine life and who wish to pursue a career in marine science. These enthusiastic applicants should show an interest in graduating as future Young Biologists at the Two Oceans Aquarium. As the programme is free of charge, applicants are chosen based on their motivational letters.
