Come on, Capetonians, let’s clean up our act! In support of International Coastal Cleanup Day on 28 September, Aquarium staff and volunteers will be cleaning up Zandvlei Estuary and Muizenberg Beach on Tuesday, 28 September. Come and join us!

Research ship welcomes young Aquarium fans aboard

Have you ever wondered what the living conditions of marine biologists and oceanographers might be aboard a research vessel, and what exactly they do? How about what it takes to keep all the inhabitants of the Two Oceans Aquarium happy? Thanks to generous sponsorship from the French Consulate, 120 Grade 11 students from Steenberg and Oaklands secondary schools had the opportunity to go aboard the visiting French research ship Tara to view the working area of the ship and interact with the scientists who live and work there.

An astonishing 80% of Cape Town’s children have never seen the ocean, despite living so nearby. This Mandela Day, create a sustainable ocean legacy by educating a child with the Two Oceans Aquarium.
Why do people visit aquariums and zoos?

According to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, “Zoos and aquariums worldwide receive more than 700-million visitors annually … This corresponds to 11% of the global human population, indicating that about one in 10 people experience human–animal interactions at zoos and aquariums each year.” There are numerous obvious reasons why aquariums and zoos are so popular.
