5 Gyres to explore plastic pollution in yet another oceanic gyre: the South Pacific

Capping the most extensive study of ocean plastic pollution ever undertaken, pioneering researchers with the 5 Gyres Institute will launch a voyage on 19 March through the fifth of five global subtropical gyres, the massive swirling areas of the ocean where plastic debris accumulates.

On Tuesday, 1 March at 11h00, Simon MAX Bannister, creator of the Plastikos exhibit in the Two Oceans Aquarium, will give a presentation on his recent expedition from Cape Town to Piriapolis (Uruguay) across the south Atlantic Ocean with the 5 Gyres Institute in search of plastic. He will be joined by Green Times reporter, Willemien Calitz, who was also aboard as a crew member.
Aquarium on alert as slender sunfish wash ashore

The Two Oceans Aquarium has received a number of calls from concerned citizens regarding slender sunfish washing ashore around the Cape Peninsula. Sightings of these animals, both dead and alive, have been reported on beaches and in the shallow water off Blouberg, Melkbos and Noordhoek.
First expedition to the south Atlantic subtropical gyre to study plastic pollution
2 February 2011Piriapolis, Uruguay — The 5 Gyres Institute will land in Piriapolis, Uruguay on 5 February, 2011 after completing a third expedition across the South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre studying plastic marine pollution. Sailing aboard their partner organisation Pangaea Exploration’s research vessel the Sea Dragon, the crew set sail from Walvis Bay, Namibia after a successful expedition in November 2010 from Brazil to South Africa to conduct the first ever transatlantic research study of The South Atlantic Gyre.
Sappi and Aquarium launch seal platform
