Hiking, snorkelling and volunteering are par for the Young Biologist Course

Hiking, snorkelling and volunteering are par for the Young Biologist Course By Katja Rockstroh / 26 April 2012

Our Young Biologist Course, sponsored by De Beers Marine, has been running for 12 years and every year it is very popular. So much so that we receive around 100 applications and can only accept a maximum of 54 Grade 10 learners per course. In light of this, the Two Oceans Environmental Education Centre team decided to run a second Young Biologist Course aimed at Grade 11s only. Our first one took place from 26 March to 1 April 2012 and saw 52 Grade 11s from across Cape Town take part.

Happy World Penguin Day!

Happy World Penguin Day! By Ingrid Sinclair / 25 April 2012

Today is World Penguin Day and, if you don’t know by now, we are quite fond of these marine birds. We have two African penguin ambassadors that live at the Two Oceans Aquarium and we conduct an annual walking campaign to raise awareness of their plight. Rockhopper penguins also have a home with us.

2012 Waddle for a Week Day 6 (21 April 2012): Muizenberg to Simon’s Town By Katja Rockstroh / 23 April 2012

The last day of the Waddle was upon us. It felt like just yesterday that we arrived in Gansbaai, excited about the week ahead and getting to know each other. Our last night was spent in Whale Watchers self-catering accommodation. With a view of Muizenberg beach and some surfing students, it was awesome to see Simon’s Town looming at the end of False Bay, our final destination of the 2012 Waddle for a Week campaign.

It was an amazing experience for the team to visit Stony Point and see the beautiful African penguins that we are waddling for. The icy cold wind took us quickly to Aandkoor Guesthouse. We were welcomed by owner Anlie who showed us our beautiful and homely rooms, with a stunning look over the large wetland in the middle of Betty’s Bay. We were treated to a great, home-cooked, three-course meal and a scrumptuos breakfast.

2012 Waddle for a Week Day 4 (19 April 2012): Kleinmond to Betty’s Bay By Katja Rockstroh / 20 April 2012

It had been a rough three days for the waddlers and everybody really needed to rest their aching legs. Die Rotse in Kleinmond was just the place for that. The third house to ever have been built in Kleinmond has been converted into a wonderful guesthouse with amazing seaviews and beautiful rooms.
